voting day
another odd election day in toronto. there are some decent and some terrible city councillor choices to make, one good public school trustee to vote for (and voting against the incumbent is pretty much mandatory since i found spelling errors in the campaign literature) and then the race for mayor. over 25 candidates, some of whom had dropped off the ballot, and a 2 horse, 1 ass race for the frontrunners.
speaking to neighbours on the way to and at the local school where voting is taking place was both grim and promising. having an election just before hallowe'en provides plenty of creepy imagery to foreshadow the attack ads, the threats from the right wing zealots having temper tantrums and the clenched ass i get when i see the dismal voter turnout statistics - half of the front gardens and lawns on the way to the school were full of ghouls and skeletons and leftover trappings from the weekend's zombie walk.
did you vote yet? if not, there's still plenty of time. participatory democracies only work when people actually participate - at least go spoil your ballot if you can't support (or vote against) a candidate.
