120609-23 Princess

LMS Princess Royal class - mostly known as the Lizzie's after this class member, the second in the class "Princess Elizabeth". It was named after the then eldest daughter of then Duke of York, now celebrating 60 years as Queen and it was none other than 6201 "Princess Elizabeth" which hauled the Royal Train for the occasion.

The Lizzies were a short lived class of locomotives designed to help the LMS catch up with the LNER technology. They borrowed heavily from designs by the Great Western and were effectively a stop gap measure to give the LMS some serious power in its express loco pool whilst they came up with a new design of their own. Only 13 were built (which discounts the experimental turbomotive) though all of them had full working lives even once they were superseded by the Duchesses.
