Only later, after the cocoon had opened, did I find out that it was an invasive and destructive species: the Gypsy Moth. Had I known I would have removed it and destroyed it. It sure did look interesting though.
An inspection of the tree after it did open did not turn up any egg sacks, so I think (and hope) it was only a male.
