Travelling through Japan

An elderly gentleman makes his way through the backstreets of Kyoto. I saw him approaching with his shiny shoes, purposeful stride and the Japanese flags attached to his trolley. I had a gut reaction that this was a moment I needed to capture. Now, looking back over the thousands of images I took on the trip, this one is special to me. I waited for the moment he would be in just enough sidelight to pick out all the essential elements.

 

I think there are several layers of meaning here. I’ll leave it up to you to work them out. What do you see?
