Dr. Dog

Ryan and I were fairly close to getting in, but the Real World Austin cast had snuck in the side door of the Parish to start filming Enon for their SXSW documentary. Sidebar: They could not have picked their documentary subjects themselves. No farging way. This guy has an account of what went on inside.

After 10, I started getting bored of standing in line and watching Ryan frustratingly punch the keys of his phone over and over again. I asked him if I could go watch another band while he held the fort in line. Thankfully, he said yes, and I went to see another band on my list for the 10 p.m. slot, Philadelphia's Dr. Dog. I had written a description that they were somewhat Beach Boys-ish. If I had to pin them down, I would have compared the mp3 I heard, "World May Never Know," to something off of Gideon Gaye by HIgh Llamas.

They were quite a strange looking band. The smallish lead guitarist had stringy long blond hair, multicolored 80s-style Rayban rip-offs and was slightly hyperactive. The bassist had a safari-style hat on and looked like he had just come from Glastonbury (can I use the word grungy now that the 90s are over). But they had great songs and a lot of energy.
