Another view of the Admin Building at Fort Laramie
Fort Laramie was purchased by the government in 1849 from the American Fur Company for $4,000. It expanded to become one of the most important military posts on the western plains in controlling the Indians, and a principal stop for immigrants traveling the Oregon Trail. This building dates from 1885. Constructed by soldier labor with the assistance of a few skilled workmen, it housed the adjutant's office, post school rooms, library and theater. The Fort was abandoned by the Army in 1890. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 1938 and designated a National Historic Site in 1960.
