Know what happens when you live with a biologist? They bring home weird dead things! And then take them apart!
Some dead things are deader than others. This poor barn owl played head-butt with a car tire (thats the head you are looking at on the left), which makes is pretty dead.
Lessons learned from the days dissection:
-Owls talons seem to be in a naturally contracted position, which probably helps them grab prey. It is faster to move a limb to its natural position rather than a flexion or extension of it.
-Unfortunately the poor guy was busted up pretty bad, I was hoping to discuss the neck anatomy with my roommate (who is big into kinetics). The only intact portions were the legs.
Birds of prey get hit by cars pretty often, as they go down to get road kill. So don't go for road kill, or else you will get hit by a... wait a minute...
