Our surprise brooder, Mustapyrstö ( Blacktail in english)

She just all of a sudden decided to start brood. She has lived with us since a small chicken and never before showed any intention to brooding. Today it's day 17 and there's few more days to do, hens usually brood about 21 days. She has 7 eggs under her.

She's been sitting so patiently at her nest, which we made of a cardboard box and put it in a private cage so she can be alone and other hens don't disturb her. She only comes out one or two times a day, eats, drinks and streches herself a bit and then she climbs back.

And to our great surprise one of our younger chickens just started to brood as well few days ago, she has 5 eggs under her and her due date is at week 29. We built a private cage for her and her hopefully forthcoming chicks.

This is all very exciting, but now I hope nobody else of our hens would start to brood this summer, because we'll run out of space if it's tens of chickens around!! So far, if all goes well, there could be 12 chicks before July is over. I still don't believe all those eggs are fertilized, but who knows?
