Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex)

This bird gets its name because its beak resembles a clog (a Dutch shoe).

It feeds on fish and uses a "standing and wait" approach. The bird breeds in the dry spells and builds its nest that is constructed on a floating platform of vegetation, surrounded by water. This species is in decline due to habitat destruction; hunting; disturbance and illegal trade.

 

Found in Sudan and Ethiopia to Zaire and Zambia.

Diet - mainly fish
