Byodo-In Temple

Byodo-In Temple is in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park on the eastern side of O'ahu, Hawai'i. It's a non-denominational Buddhist temple built as a replica of the original near Kyoto, Japan (in honor of Hawai'i's Japanese citizens). The original (in Kyoto) is purely of wood, built with no nails. This one is mostly made of concrete.

It's located in a park -- mostly cemetery -- that is split into different areas. The Chinese have an area (on top of a hill), Japanese have Shinto tombs, etc. The exiled Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos was originally interred here (if you see a blue pavilion upon visiting, that was his spot) before being returned to the Philippines upon Imelda's death. (She left most of her shoes here in Hawai'i.)

All in all, it's a pretty temple with a beautiful backdrop and, if driving around the island, it's certainly worth a quick stop (with a $5 admission).
