Intel 186 processor from 1982 running at a smooth 12Mhz

After Intel's 8086 came this enhanced 80186. This is the bottom of the chip and the gold connectors were a change from the pin-based connectors that came before.

 

As this processor was primarily used in embedded devices, it was still being produced into 2006, when processors were at 3Ghz+.
