FJWestcott Booth: Stud
At Photoshop World 2012, this year FJWestcott, yet again, setup a great booth. They had three separate "scenes" that models were brought in and out of with a variety of stylings. This year was much more adventurous in the variety of looks presented. It ranged from cos-play, to steampunk, or horror, and even glamour/fashion. So whatever your interest, you were sure to shoot something that you'd be into.
So it's a bit cliché as a title but that was basically the role this model played. He was "The Stud" as I heard one little old lady photographing him say those words, I chuckled. What became apparent to me is that photographers, especially new photographers, have no idea how ot shoot guys. They were afraid to have him square to the lens, and do things with poses, because that's what we're told not to do with female models. But, as I started directing him, lots of other photographers started asking me questions like "why are you squaring him up to the lens? And, why are you having him put his weight on that leg?". I reminded them that the reason we don't do those things with women, is because they don't look feminine. Something to consider, anything you know or do about posing women...do the opposite for posing men. Break those rules, and you might get something more masculine.
This guy was great though and took direction like a champ. What was nice was the fact that while 50+ other people were snapping the "hot" female models, only about eight of us at a time were working with the male model. This was much more manageable and enjoyable. The particular look he had was a bit limiting, "bouncer, stripper, hustler" were all titles I heard announced. I saw him more as a young male model advertising this watch he was wearing. That gave me something to focus on, and him something to drive his poses around. That was enough for me to get something intersting from him.
