A couple months back I took the Really Right Stuff fluid head prototype for another spin. I hoped to capture some surfers but the waves were so small I may have actually been able to handle them... So instead I did some goofball selfies tracking the rare, Shell Beach Gull.
It's been too long since I've set up in the tide like this and my upcoming weekends are going to be dedicated to getting out and exploring again. While I love super long exposures, I mostly like them for the cloud effects. For seascapes I'm obsessed with shutter speeds lasting anywhere from 1/8th to a couple seconds to capture the dynamic movement of tides coming in and receding. These slow shutter speeds can really help salvage a "crappy" sunset or a boring, mid-day sky. I always get so pumped when the night sky comes up bright on my LCD or when the clouds dance exactly as I'd hoped during my several minute long exposure. But my absolute favorite moments in photography come when I completely soak my not-even-close-to-appropriate beach clothes, look at the back of the camera and say, "That was freakin' worth it." ...But for this shot in particular...I just got soaked.
