Check out the neat electric clutch. Normally the central hollow shaft spins independently of the white gear. Apply a few volts to the pins, and the gear locks to the shaft. I got it out of an old printer or scanner or something, never did put it to work, but it should find a good home doing some useful work eventually. Blog entry
