'Berkshire Set' Thumper
BR Class 205 [3H] 'Berkshire Set' unit 205 030 was waiting in the bay platform at Reading to work the 14:50 NSE service to Basingstoke. Delivered in 1962 as Unit 1130 it was one of the final batch [1127-1133] of this class of diesel-electric multiple units built at BR Eastleigh Works between 1957 and 1962. This fourth batch of units was built for local services between Reading and Basingstoke and other services in Berkshire.
As with other Southern Region DEMUs, they were nicknamed 'Thumpers' because of the noise made by their English Electric 4-cylinder 600bhp diesel power units. This particular example was withdrawn in November 1992 and scrapped.
