Another picture I need to retake. I was having some difficulty with depth of field. I tried splitting the distance between the tree and the rock and then stopping down to f/64. Normally when I do this procedure, there is very little difference between focus plane A and focus plane B, we're talking one to three millimeters at most, so stopping all the way down is never really required. However, here the difference was much more than that, so I'm assuming the optimal f-stop would have been smaller than what my shutter is capable of. In any case, I made two exposures, both at f/64; one with the focus spread situated between the rock and the tree, and another with a single focus point on the tree itself.
The picture with the focus plane between the tree and the rock produced better sharpness on the rock in the background, but the tree was not as sharp as I would prefer. The second iteration, (shown here), produced a sharp tree, but the background rock fell outside of the depth of field. My error it seems was placing the focus plane at the midway point instead of one third of the distance between the two objects. So, now I have an excuse to make another attempt at this increasingly iconic, and somewhat clichéd scene (I don't mind that).
