G-AZNA Vickers V834 Viscount Manx Airlines MAN 20NOV82
Replacing an earlier scanned slide with a better version 23-Jan-16.
Named: "Skianyn Vannin".
This aircraft was delivered to SAA South African Airways in Dec-58 as ZS-CDX. It was later due to be re-registered ZS-SBX but the registration wasn't used.
It was sold to BMA British Midland Airways in Feb-72, originally it was due to be registered G-AZLU but that wasn't taken up and it became G-AZNA instead. The aircraft was stored at East Midlands, UK, in Jan-82.
It returned to service in Aug-82 painted in basic Manx Airlines livery with British Midland titles. In Nov-82 it was leased to Manx Airlines, returning to BMA in Oct-84. It was briefly leased to Manx Airlines again between Oct/Nov-85.
The aircraft was sold to British Aerospace (in part-exchange for B.Ae ATP's) in May-86 and leased back to BMA. It was sub-leased to Manx Airlines briefly in Feb-88. It was returned to British Aerospace at the end of Feb-88 and sold to 'Sean T Hully (Sales) Ltd in Mar-88.
In Jul-88 it was leased to Hot Air (yes, they really were an airline!). It was sub-leased to Gambia Air Shuttle in Nov-88. Hot Air was merged into BAF British Air Ferries in Apr-90 and the lease to Gambia Air Shuttle was terminated.
The aircraft returned to BAF although it was never repainted in their full livery, remaining in basic Gambia Air Shuttle livery with BAF titles.
It was retired in Jul-90 and stored at Teesside Airport, UK. It was ferried to Southend, UK, in Oct-90 for further storage. The aircraft was returned to Sean T Hully (Sales) Ltd in Jan-91 and remained stored at Southend.
In Sep-92 it was sold to a Belgian Nightclub Company, N9 Dancing Korkoriko. It was dismantled and transported by road to Zomergen (located on the N9 between Eeklo and Ghent, Belgium) where it was rebuilt, mounted on poles and displayed outside the nightclub in all white livery. It was noted still there in 2021.
To see my photo of a 'Hot Air' Viscount, type G-OHOT in the box at top right of this page.
If you're looking for strange airline names... there used to be an airline operating Avro 748's out of Goa, India. They were called 'Goa Way'...
