An eastbound NS freight passing the decommissioned Appalachian Power Company’s Glen Lyn Plant. AEP closed the facility in 2015 citing new clean air standards. Prior to the time it was retired, the plant enjoyed an interesting history. In 1918, the first of six generating units was installed. Unit five, rated at 95,000 kilowatts, was the oldest coal-fired operating unit in the AEP system. It began producing power in 1944, and was, at the time, the largest power generator in the southeastern U.S. Unit six began producing commercial power in 1957 with a capacity of 240,000 kilowatts.
I am not sure if it supplied any power to the nearby Virginia Railway electrified main as the VGN had their own plant 10 miles to the east at Narrows, Virginia. Narrows is so named account the New River squeezed in between Peters Mountain on the north and Wolf Creek Mountain to the south of the river.
