Existential Threat or Actual Danger? - Jerusalem Prayer Team Article
The phrase “existential threat” is often bandied about in the media in discussing the status of Israel and that Middle East. What exactly does that mean? It means simply that your life and that of your country could end at any time— depending on the actions of another party; Iran.
Threats against Israel abound. Just recently, Sheikh Ahmad Bahr, deputy speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, delivered a televised sermon that called for the annihilation of every Jewish person and all those who support them. He said, “Oh, Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters…the Americans and their supporters. Oh, Allah, count them one by one, and kill them all, without leaving a single one.”
Bahr did not just single out Israel, but the United States as well. He is not the first, and he won’t be the last to threaten the Jewish state. The leaders of Iran, and especially President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have for years been calling for the obliteration of Israel—the utter annihilation of the Jewish people.
I still remember the days of Civil Defense drills from when I was in elementary school. We were marched out into the hallways and made to sit along the walls. Or sometimes we had to crawl under our desks and cover our heads with our arms. This was done because a Russian leader, Nikita Khrushchev, had made threats against the United States and people feared a nuclear war.
It is hard for the U.S. public to wrap their minds around the very real possibility that we could, once again, be the target of a madman bent on our destruction.
It seems that the rhetoric has been ramped up in past weeks. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, called Zionism “a danger for all humanity.” Ahmadinejad bombastically shouted that Israel’s very existence was an “insult to all humanity.” Shortly thereafter, he regaled a group of Muslim leaders with this challenge: “Anyone who loves freedom and justice must strive for the annihilation of the Zionist regime.”
Like the long ago drills of the 1950s, many have forgotten the desperate days of World War II— ghettos, concentration camps, ovens, and mass graves whose maws swallowed up tens of thousands of the innocent. The Jewish people have not forgotten! The roll call of the dead includes mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and children who perished—a total of six million. This is something the Israelis will never forget—ever!
There are few, if any, who envy Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the horrendously difficult choice of whether or not to preemptively strike Iran’s nuclear facilities. Calls for diplomacy, negotiations, and sanctions go out daily, and still Iran resists all efforts and entreaties to halt its work. Instead it has accelerated its endeavors.
It seems probable that were Iran to attack Israel, the United States would take up the gauntlet. The results in Iran would be calamitous. But it was the leader of the Iranian Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini who said, “I say let Iran go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant in the rest of the world.” Ahmadinejad was also a student of Khomeini and shares his views and value system.
With the fanatical Muslim mindset of jihad and all that portends for the terrorist martyrs who have little regard for human life, many would volunteer to march forward into paradise for the sake of the destruction of the Zionist regime. An apocalyptic event such as a retaliatory war following a strike on Israel would be just what Ahmadinejad craves, and what he believes will ensure the return of the “twelfth imam” who will institute Islamic sharia rule over the entire world.
