Dark Red Helleborine, Epipactis atrorubens
It comes a bit of a shock to this southern softie, that the orchid season in other parts of the country are not so far ahead as in Kent.
On the way to Kielder, we called in at this location to see the Dark Red, only to find not one in flower, and most all still in the process of unfurling.
We called back on the way back down south a week later, and found just one in flower. But what a sight!
Apparently, one has just been found in Kent, which would be wonderful, but to see hundreds of these, all in flower would be special. In a week or so here, that is just what you will see.
Also seen at this site were Common Spotted, Northern Marsh, Pyramidal and three Bee! Wonderful stuff, and most of the other orchids were in their hundreds, if not thousands. Even a couple of ver. alba Common Spotted.
