My little brother Thomas was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
My sister called while Evan and I were in St. Augustine to tell us that on Monday he fell and broke his femur. This is not the first time this has happened. In fact, a few years ago he had surgery where doctors inserted telescoping rods in his femurs to give support as he grows and hopefully reduce fractures. He has pretty massive scars on both legs from his hips to his knees. I think they make him a little badass. This most recent fall not only broke the top of his femur (at the hip joint) but damaged the rod as well. On Tuesday, Thomas had surgery to remove the top part of the damaged rod. He is now in a spica cast. His cast starts under his armpits and extends down both legs to his ankles. Being in a spica cast sucks. New rods had to be ordered from Canada and as soon as they arrive Tom will have another surgery to insert them. He will be in a cast that makes it impossible for him to walk or even really get around on his own at all for 10-12 weeks.
Please send good thoughts to both Tom and my Mom while she cares for him. (One hospital website says that spica casts may be more difficult on the parents then the children who adjust to them quickly. I'll ask my Mom if she thinks that's a fair statement or not but for now I'll say... it's no picnic.) Thankfully this is a temporary situation. Tom has the ability to be a completely rotten little monster or the most incredibly beautiful, sweet and curious child you've ever met. He is active and energetic and I foresee both of them going a little bonkers during this whole ordeal. So please send some thoughts for patience and fast healing... and any other good stuff you've got while you're at it.
