Basilica romana, Volubilis
About an hour from Fez lies the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Volubilis originated in the 3rd Century BC and was one of the more remote outposts of the Roman Empire. It is estimated that it once housed up to 20,000 people. The Romans are said to have abandoned the city around 280 AD as the Roman Empire began to decline and Berber tribes began to move back into the area.
The heart of the city consists of a forum with adjoining temples, a basilica, a capitol complex dedicated to Jupiter, and several baths (thermes). This shots looks along the arches of the Basilica romana and facing what was once the Forum.
