Passing Pelican
A solitary American White Pelican glides effortlessly above the glassy surface, its striking black-tipped wings and bright orange bill reflected in the soft, pastel ripples of the quiet morning water.
I photographed this bird three years ago in the summertime.
Here are three FUN FACTS about these amazing birds:
1. Unlike Brown Pelicans that dive from the air, American White Pelicans fish from the surface by swimming in groups to herd prey into shallow water.
2. American White Pelicans are among the heaviest flying birds in North America (14 to 20 lbs.) with a massive wingspan that can reach up to nine feet across.
3. During the breeding season, these birds grow a unique "horn" on the top of their large bills which they eventually shed once the eggs have been laid.
