Mystery Shells

My father died 30 years ago. Among his things, we found this box of sea shells. It is a mystery to us how he came to have all these shells. He lived almost all his life in Colorado, far from any ocean. The only time I know of that he lived near the sea was during World War I. He was a soldier then and I have photos of him with various young ladies on the beach. Could he have collected these shells then and kept them in this box all that time? And why didn't he ever bring them out and show them to us?

It's a mystery which I'll probably never be able to solve.

The box of shells sits on a shelf behind my place at the dinner table. Once in awhile I open the box and gaze at the shells .... just wondering.
