Birmingham rail scrubber/grinder No. 8

An old photograph of Birmingham Corporation Tramways (BCT) rail scrubber/grinder No. 8, also referred to as No. PW8, PW meant it was a 'Permanent Way Car'.

The photo reverse is annotated as having been taken in "Witton Depot" and stamped as it having been taken by S. N. J. White.

No. 8 was originally City of Birmingham Tramways car No. 158, built as a double deck open top car in 1901 by the 'Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works' and running on a Peckham 9A Cantilever truck. When the system was taken over by BCT the car was renumbered as 505 and in 1913 retrucked with a Brill 21E.

In Dec 1920 No. 505 was withdrawn from service and converted into a single deck rail scrubber/grinder and allocated fleet No. 8, in Nov 1929 the body was removed at the Kyotts Lake Road Works (KLRW) and replaced with the body of car No. 266 which had been used as an illuminated tram. This was another open top double deck car, but built in 1907 by the 'United Electric Car Co.', as well as being cut down to single deck and fitted with vestibules it was retrucked with a Brush Conaty (Radial) truck, returning to service in Mar 1930.

Towards the end of the system No. 8 was used in KLRW to shunt around the withdrawn cars, because of this it was the last car to run operationally on the BCT system, as well as being the last car broken up by W. T. Bird & Sons in Aug 1953.

The parts of the Birmingham tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Jul 1953.

Any photograph, ephemera, etc I post on Flickr is in my possession, nothing is copied from another location. The original photographer may have taken copies from their original negative and passed them out (sold them?) so there may be other copies out there of your (and my) 'original' transport photo, although occasionally there may be 'holiday snaps' type photos where there are not any other photos exactly the same in existence.

If you wish to use this image (bearing in mind it may not be my copyright) or obtain a full size version (most of my uploads are small size) please contact me.
