Representing hope
To the Israeli government and most of its people, the UN represents an organisation intent on unfairly criticising Israel, whether it’s through accusations of war crimes or deeming settlement building as illegal. To the Palestinian “government” (PLO) and most of its people, the UN single-handedly symbolises the organisation that created the state of Israel, which caused so many Palestinian refugees and fatalities.
But to so many children throughout Gaza and the West Bank, the UN symbolises hope. The United Nations has helped fund hundreds of schools and projects across the occupied territories, including a school I visited in Balata refugee camp, where this flag is flying high.
