Stone Forests

Vegetation everywhere is the salient feature of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Over 90% of the surface area of the park is covered in one form or another of vegetation.

The forest park is home to over 500 species of trees. Among them 7 species are rare including the "living fossils" - Ginkgo (Maidenhair tree) and Chinese Dove Tree. The Dove Tree (also known as the Handkerchief Tree) is perhaps the most famous. It is regarded as a “living fossil”, having survived during the Glacier of the Fourth Period (2.5 million years ago).
