Hundreds gain new skills in onion, sheep and honey production in Belize

As the FAO’s project to promote agribusiness development in Northern Belize comes to a close, several onion, sheep and honey farmers have benefitted from a series of technical training sessions to improve their production practices.

Since the project began in January 2015, farmers have been introduced to new skills such as Value Chain analysis for the three commodities-onion, sheep and honey. In addition to specific product accomplishments, Extension Officers also learned the “Farmer Field School Methodology” (FFS) which is a very effective way of transferring knowledge to farmers.

Some of the major project accomplishments by commodities are:

• 88 farmers trained in onion production best practices using the “Farmer Field School Methodology” (FFS).

• 6 onion demonstration plots were established in Northern Belize for farmer training.

• “Onion Production Guide” to be published and as a reference book for farmer training.

• 28 beekeepers were trained in modern beekeeping management practices.

• “An Extension Training Manual for Beekeeping” and “Beekeeping in Northern Belize- A Farmer’s Field Guide developed.

• 28 beneficiary farmers will receive forage cutters to chop the forages to feed the sheep.

• 25 heads of Kathadin breeding stock will be imported to upgrade the quality of sheep in northern Belize. Beneficiary farmers will also receive a male offspring to help them upgrade their flocks.
