Fossil Insect 2
Insects and their kin enjoyed their own "age of giants" millions of years before the dinosaurs appeared. Gigantic spiders, huge millipedes and dragonflies with wingspans of nearly a meter once lived on Earth, but by the time of the dinosaurs, they had shrunk to much the size we know today.
Nearly every insect we are familiar with was around in Mesozoic times, and most types were around long before that. Some. like cockroaches, have changed little over 300 million years, yet continue to show their talent for survival by adapting to our modern urban landscapes with ease.
Fossils collected in Liaoning province of China.
Location: Storyeum, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
