Sunset and smoke at Centralia

There was a huge storm coming as we drove to Centralia. We saw at least three rainbows; just as we were giving up the clouds moved on and the sun came out to cast everything in these gorgeous yellow tones.

Centralia is the site of a mine fire that's been burning since at at least the late 1960s. There are only a handful of residents left, and most of the houses have been torn down, leaving a street grid that's been taken over by a surprisingly lush grassland. If you've ever thought of going there to poke around, do it soon, because the fire has shifted since I was there last year, and it will soon become much more difficult to explore. It's now strongest directly underneath the only road left on which you can drive.

I've got a few more shots to sort through from that afternoon, plus a roll of film to get processed.
