St John Ambulance, Beverley Nursing Division at Saturday Market, Beverley, 1940.
Originally founded in 1877, the St John Ambulance has recently celebrated it’s 140 year anniversary. A Brigade was in place in Beverley by at least 1937, and in 1945, the Association moved premises to the former Scotch Baptist Chapel on the corner of Morton Lane and Wilbert Lane where it has remained to this day.
This image shows members of the Beverley Brigade ready for ‘War Work’ duty standing outside Westerbys. They were Corn and Hay Straw Dealers, Pure Dripping Manufacturers and Tallow Chandlers in Saturday Market.
The Beverley Picture Playhouse situated in the corner is showing the latest film of the day, ‘All Came True’ starring Ann Sheridan and Humphrey Bogart.
