wheels spinning

i just heard some interesting statistics on cbc.

there are approximately. 10000 people who have gone to a casino or gambling center in ontario and registered with ontario's lottery and gaming commission to agree to be disallowed from any such gambling establishment. the olg paperwork for these people who are desperate enough to go to these great lengths to keep from gambling includes a clause that relieves olg of any wrongdoing if they are allowed into the gambling establishment and 'do themselves harm'.

these 10000 people are asking for help. they've asked the olg to keep them out.

so each casino or track has 10000 pictures of people in binders that security is supposed to use to keep these people out. you do the math. if i showed you 10000 pictures, would you recognize any of them if they came to your door?

and yet, 35% of revenue is generated from people with gambling problems...

something is not working.

folks - gamble for fun if you like - but why is our government doing this to us? studies were done years before our casinos opened in ontario. we know that people who can't afford to lose money are the ones who end up financing our government as it tries to find yet another way to gather money.

when will our government stop trying to generate more income (more taxes, more fees, more fines, more gambling) and start cutting back on spending for more bureaucracy?

btw, this is the fountain in the front lobby of the fallsview casino in niagara falls, ontario.
