O&K RH 120 C

The most successful mining excavator in the 200 tonne class, the O&K RH 120 C has been manufactured in backhoe and front shovel configuration. Many of which were in service in the British open-cast coal fields beginning in the mid-eighties. Later succeeded by the Terex O&K RH 120-E, the O&K products today are part of Caterpillars line-up, where the machine is still available as the 6030.

My model in 1/28.5 scale represents the backhoe version in O&K's original red and white color scheme. It is remote controlled using two LEGO Technic Control+ hubs, one of which is located in the carbody and the other in the upper structure. Using the Brick Controller 2 app, the model can be operated via a game controller.

The following functions are motorized:

- Left crawler track: 1 PU L motor

- Right crawler track: 1 PU L motor

- Slewing gear: 1 PU L motor

- Boom: 1 Power Functions XL motor, connected to the Control+ hub using an adapter cable

- Stick: 1 PU L motor

- Bucket: 1 PU L motor

The motors for the boom, stick and bucket are located in the rear part of the upper structure, with articulated shafts transferring power to the cylinders. While the stick and bucket cylinders are LEGO Power Functions parts, I had to find a different solution for the boom, due to the longer stroke needed. Therefore the boom cylinders are a combination of rack and worm gear.
