Connor - Mongolia Read Aloud School 19 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
“Mongolia Read Aloud,” an outreach project started this year by the English language fellow with the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, aims to forge a stronger educational community in the capital city of Mongolia while celebrating the power of reading. “Read Aloud” events continued this past month as a continuation of the initial “World Read Aloud Day,” which recognizes literacy as a right to all people and was celebrated by over 75 countries and more than1 million participants all over the world.
On March 19, the English language fellow in Mongolia, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, and six local university teachers visited School 84 to celebrate “Mongolia Read Aloud.” 60 tenth grade students, along with six of the high school’s English teachers, participated in the reading of Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree,” and created their own stories on how to give back to nature and the community around them.
The celebration of literacy continued this past week at School 19, a primary and secondary school located just outside of the capital city. English language fellow conducted the literacy lesson with two local English teachers from the University of Science and Technology, Bulgan Sandagdorj and Tsengel Dorjkhand. 97 of the school’s students from grades 9, 10 and 11, along with five of their English teachers, showed a great deal of enthusiasm and gratitude for being able to celebrate their love for reading and English.
We will continue “Mongolia Read Aloud” events by connecting with a total of ten local secondary schools in and around Ulaanbaatar. The participating high school English teachers are looking forward to one of three workshops this April with the English language fellow in which they will learn and explore best teaching practices for incorporating literacy in the English classroom.
