Haleakala Crater Predawn Light

View Large On Black. A telephoto shot of the rim of Haleakala Crater looking east in the pre-dawn light. To see the sunrise, takes a level of dedication many would choose to forgo. It's a two hour drive to the crater summit. Since you need to be there about 5 a.m. to watch the show, it means getting out of bed at 2:30.

When you get to the summit, you leave the balmy Maui morning temperatures and face something closer to 45 degrees with winds up to 40 miles per hour. On top of this, your lungs are struggling for oxygen at 2 miles of elevation.

I faced this along with the several hundred other tourists waiting for the show, many too lightly dressed and huddled in blankets they pulled from their hotel rooms.

This shot was taken about a half hour before the sun rose. In the earliest light I had trouble distinguishing the crater rim from the clouds. The clouds form a perfect cliff face going down the two miles to sea level.

This image is an HDR render of three exposures.
