28 years after the biggest chemical catastrophe The Union Carbide Chemical plant in Bhopal, India, still stnads as a reminder of the disaster which ultimately killed in excess of 22,000 people within the first months of the MET (methyl isocyanate) leak from a tank. The ground hugging vapor causes suffocation and ultimately drowning in the pulmonary and respiratory failure.
Since then over half a million people jave been effected in both latent respiratory complications and manipulation of DNA, producing birth defects.
The Indian government which held a 49% stake in the company at the time, have been instrumental in contorting the initial compensation release to the victims and their families. Dow chemicals bought Union Carbide in 2001.
The images show the state of the factory as it stands today. it is located in a shanty town area of inner north western Bhopal, many hundreds of thousands of people live in this area and many of the local residents draw water from the nearby Chemical Vapor Evaporation Ponds which were nasty waste water dumps where the theory was that the chemical would evaporate along with the water, but the chemical is heavier then water so that it sinks into the soil.
