Chaz
Purebred Golden Retriever (with AKC papers, even), adopted from the Greater West Metro Animal Shelter (now part of the Animal Humane Society), Buffalo, MN, in 2006.
Chaz was surrendered by a family who had produced three litters by their two Golden Retrievers. They kept Chaz out of the last litter because he was the biggest and friendliest of the puppies, and their teenaged son wanted to train him for hunting. But then the son turned 16, got his driver's license and lost all interest in the dog.
By this time, Chaz was two years old. Knowing he wouldn't turn out right if he didn't get more attention and training, the parents turned him in to the shelter to be rehomed. By complete chance, I spotted him on Petfinder one day, left my coffee cooling on my desk and drove 30 miles to the shelter to adopt him.
Chaz is now six--and a registered therapy dog as well as my constant companion.
