A very special visitor dropped in today, the chipping sparrow. This is not a normal bird where I live, and in fact I have only ever seen this species in the yard once in twelve years, back on April 24, 2018. More than anything else what struck me about it today was its size. At about half an ounce on average, it is by far the smallest sparrow in the yard, and about half the size of my only every-day sparrow, the song sparrow. Chipping sparrow, backyard Olympia.
