Supporting the smart Tyne & Wear livery. 143023 is seen in original condition at CARLISLE station. When new they were fitted with Leyland TL11 engines and Self Changing Gears Mechanical transmission which proved very unreliable. But an overhaul programme which included fitting Cummins engines and Hydraulic Voith transmission, saw there availability improve. On refurbishment they were re-classified 143601-625 and transferred to Regional Railways South Wales & West. Today a small batch of 8 sets are with First/GWR for Torbay services, and Arriva Trains Wales have 15 sets for Valley Lines services. TWO units 613/615 have been scrapped after suffering fire damage!
