Pictures are of undergraduate teachers

who are blind or visually impaired

at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.

 

In Kenya less than 10% of blind people

complete even primary education

yet those pictured are completing

university educaiton and beginning

work as teachers in state schools

and call centre staff for

East Africa's largest company

and mobile phone operator, Safaricom.

 

Learners are provided with latop

computers from charity

Computer Aid International

and adaptive technology that

provides screen magnification

and 'screen reader' sound output

enabling blind and visually impaired

users to operate the PC and access

the internet.

 

This project was initiated by the NGO SightSavers International with input

from Kenyan Union of the Blind,

and Kenyatta University

with with funding from DFID

and other donors.

 

Computer Aid Interntional has provided

more than 200 desktop and laptop

computers for training centres and

for individual learners.
