Week 157
This week we were surrounded by people who love Olive and who support and care about our little family. Few days go by when we aren’t acutely aware of how lucky we are. This week, Gram and Uncle Colin made the trip from Pennsylvania to celebrate Olive’s birthday with us. Her Mimi and Gaigai took time from their busy lives to come early and help us prepare for her party. Her godmother, Tina, and friend Heather gave up their precious free time to help decorate. And her Aunt Valerie and Uncle Kevin drove from Raleigh to spend a weekend celebrating her. Her party was full of her friends and their parents and their love was palpable. Our lives are so much richer with these people in it. Between visitors, her birthday and her party, the weekend flew by. Before I knew it, it was time to fly to Florida for a work trip. I was excited to try out my new lens, even if it meant early wake up calls and dawn shoots. The work started a bit shaky when I got stuck in the sand but it turned out to be a really great trip.
Last year we began a new tradition of filling Olive’s crib with balloons the morning of her birthday. Next year she’ll be in a bed and we can do it before she wakes up. I looking back on how much she’s grown and also still stay the same.
When I realized that Olive’s birthday party would fall on her actual birthday, I was determined to plan a party that would be simple. I wanted plenty of time on her birthday to be present and soak up the day with her. We decided on a tea party theme since she loves hosting tea parties for her babies and adores dressing up. My mom suggested a waffle bar, which was brilliant! We got five dozen waffles from Cast Iron and a variety of yummy toppings. I found a ton of dress up items and put them out for her friends. I made her cake and Valerie made the icing. The favors were tea bags and “sugar cubes” in a little box. Olive spent most of her party having a private tea party in her room. She still isn’t a fan of sharing her favorite toys. “I hear someone riding my scooter. I’m just going to close my door.” We took it easy for dinner and ordered take out from our favorite Italian place. At bedtime, we told her the story of her birth.
