As the first light of dawn appears, the earliest barge to leave Manaus to cross the mouth of the Negro river and then the upper Amazon is nearing the "opposite bank" of the highway crossing. This is the first ordeal, to drive on the infamous BR-319... the partially unpaved federal highway from Manaus to Porto Velho. The first barge leaves Manaus at 04:30h, and arrives about a quarter to six at Careiro da Varzea.
