The tragic case of the Nikon D90.
Following the Northern Japan earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown, Japan shut down all of its nuclear power plants. Suddenly saving electricity became a high priority, and as part of that effort, the city shut off about half of the street lights.
One late afternoon, my wife and I went for a photowalk in the hills near our house, and on the way home, stopped at a nearby supermarket to do some shopping.
By the time we finished shopping it was completely dark outside. Being the dutiful husband, I was carrying shopping bags in both hands, and had my camera hanging around my neck. Without the streetlights, I didn't see the uneven spot on the sidewalk. I twisted my ankle, fell hard on my knees, and watched the camera swing in a long arc before smashing to the sidewalk.
The only visible damage was the pop-up flash would no longer pop-down, but the innards were irreparably broken. Which gave me the perfect excuse to upgrade to the D7100 that I'm still using today.
