Took this photo while out walking the dog this afternoon.
My wife and I got into a spirited disagreement as to whether this is a Chinese restaurant or not. Her position was that it's a ramen shop, which it clearly is. My argument was that since every item on the menu is of Chinese origin, it's the kind of Chinese restaurant called Chuka ryori. No, she said, Chuka ryori is what we call all Chinese restaurants, but not -- definitely not -- ramen shops. We agreed to disagree.
When we got home I ran to the internet and found that I was right. Chuka ryori is Chinese food altered to suit Japanese tastes. Foods typically served at a Chuka ryori restaurant included ramen, gyoza, shumai and harumaki (those final three are Japanese versions of Chinese dumplings.) The menu at this restaurant features a variety of ramen, gyoza and shumai.
It's really quite funny how often I know more about Japan and its culture than native-born Japanese people do.
