My family led a very transient existence during my first nine years or so. I attended at least two different schools every year until fifth grade.
Since I was always the new kid in class, I was painfully shy. And the class bullies made sure to reinforce that feeling.
This is my fourth grade class photo in the town where my family finally settled down.
My teacher here is Miss August. To my nine-year-old eyes, she was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. Either she took a bad photo, or my taste in women has changed with time. But beautiful or not, she was really nice to me and helped me come out of my shell.
One of my clearest memories of Miss August, was the day she came into class after a recess in tears and announced that President Kennedy had been assassinated. The fascinating thing about that memory is that it didn't happen. I finished fourth grade in June 1963. Kennedy was assassinated in November. Memory is a funny thing.
I hope you were able to spot me in the photo. I really haven't changed a bit in all these years. For special bonus points, can you guess which girl I had a huge one-sided fourth-grade crush on?
