I hate shaving.

I had a full beard pretty much continuously between ages 18-35. I shaved it off the night before my second son was born, for no particular reason, and then never grew it back again. At least not for keeps. I let it grow out during summer vacation last year and was somewhat surprised to find that my beard is now nearly as white as Santa's.

Oh, I nearly forgot. Today was White Day. White Day is the complement to Valentine's Day here in Japan. Valentine's Day was introduced into Japan by a chocolate company after World War II. But somehow, maybe because Japanese men were incapable of expressing themselves romantically, the tradition became that women would give chocolates to men they were interested in. Well, about 25 years ago a marshmallow company decided to create a day for men to return the favor from Valentine's Day. Unfortunately for the company, marshmallows were just not that popular. So White Day is now the day when men give yet more chocolates to the women they received Valentine's gifts from. Interestingly, in the past three or four years, men (well, at least school boys - that's where I get my information) have become even more incapable of expressing themselves, so these days Valentine's Day and White Day seem to be dominated by girls giving chocolate to other girls. And they wonder why the birthrate is so low in this country...
