Cottingham Farm in Talbot County, Maryland
The 18-acre wetland on Cottingham farm in Easton, Md., is seen on the evening of July 21, 2015. The area once was a cornfield, but around 2003 farm owner Cleo Braver employed the expertise of Ned Gerber of Chesapeake Wildlife Heritage (CWH), a nonprofit, to design, build, and manage a wetland habitat to replace it. CWH helps landowners enroll in the Conservation Research Enhancement Program (CREP), a USDA farm bill program that can be used to fund the building of such habitat on private land. Ninety percent of the cost of the Cottingham wetland was funded through CREP, with the remaining 10 percent covered by Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
