A Teaspoon of Radio

The micro-module electronics of a receiver fits in a teaspoon with room to spare. This radio – smaller than a lump of sugar – was one of the items unveiled by the US Signal Research & Development Laboratory and the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) during a demonstration in New York City. These cubical micro-modules measure a third of an inch on each side. They were made of micro-elements stacked up to form the modules, which performed complete circuit functions. This “disciplined geometry” lead to equipment size reductions of 90 percent in some cases. At the time, RCA was was the prime contractor in this program. Photo c1960.
