Looks like this was the 1898 version of "fair trade", "organic", etc "greenwash" marketing, in the way it talks about work conditions, worker training & housing, wages, etc.
It doesn't seem to have worked in the long run. By 1903, they were having strikes & legal arbitration, and at some point after they must have vanished, as I've never heard of them and I can't find a Google hit for anything less than 100 years ago.
