Last time I visited the USA I met with a friend of a friend who is wheelchair-bound from a bullet that lodged in his spine... his crime was to be sitting in a restaurant when someone nearby had a fight with their girlfriend. Owning a gun wouldn't have saved him from lifetime paralysis.
